What Is a Trade Test? Everything You Need to Know About Kenya’s Fastest Entry to a Skilled Career
By Delight Technical College | Academic Guide | 2026
The Trade Test is one of the most misunderstood qualifications in Kenya’s education system. Many people dismiss it as a lesser option, something for those who ‘couldn’t make it’ academically. The reality is very different. A Trade Test is a powerful, government-recognised qualification that gives you a marketable skill quickly, opens doors to employment and self-employment, and can serve as the first step of a progression pathway that leads all the way to a university degree. Here is everything you need to know.
🔧 What Exactly Is a Trade Test?
A Trade Test is a practical, competency-based qualification offered at the artisan level of Kenya’s TVET framework. It is assessed and certified by NITA (the National Industrial Training Authority) and focuses almost entirely on the ability to perform a specific trade skill to a professional standard. Think of it as proof certified by the government that you can do the job.

“The Trade Test is not a consolation prize, it is a launchpad. It is the fastest way to go from zero to professional in Kenya’s creative and technical sectors.”
💡 Thousands of Kenya’s most successful small business owners in fashion, photography, and design started with a Trade Test. The qualification works because it teaches what employers and clients actually need.
