The newsroom has changed fundamentally. Today’s journalism is distributed, real-time, and deeply embedded in social media platforms. For a new generation of Kenyan journalists, social media is not an afterthought, it is the primary arena where news is discovered, reported, distributed, and consumed. Delight Technical College’s Digital Journalism Diploma trains students to lead in this new reality.

📱 How Social Media Has Transformed Journalism

News Discovery:

Breaking news appears on social media before it reaches traditional newsrooms. Eyewitnesses post first; journalists verify and contextualise second. Social media monitoring is now a constant professional activity.

Source Development:

A journalist with a well-managed X or LinkedIn account can reach politicians, experts, and eyewitnesses directly bypassing press officers and gatekeepers entirely.

Live Journalism:

Twitter/X threads, Facebook Live, and TikTok Live allow real-time reporting that traditional broadcast cannot match for speed.

Two-Way Audience Engagement:

Audiences now provide tips, corrections, and questions in real time. Managing this relationship professionally is a new but essential journalism skill.

🎓 Social Media Journalism at Delight

Platform Literacy:

  • Deep familiarity with X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn
  • Each platform’s algorithm- how content is surfaced and what drives engagement
  • Platform-specific formats- what works on each and why
  • Professional conduct norms for journalists on social media

Real-Time Reporting:

  • Live tweet and post structure- maintaining a coherent real-time narrative
  • Mobile live video journalism- reporting from events via smartphone
  • Breaking news verification under deadline pressure

Verification in the Social Media Age:

  • Reverse image search- confirming photographs are from the claimed location
  • Account authentication- assessing source credibility and identity
  • Video geolocation- confirming where footage was recorded
  • Cross-referencing- confirming information independently before publishing

Building a Journalist’s Personal Brand:

  • Profile optimisation across professional platforms
  • Audience growth- attracting followers interested in your beat
  • Managing criticism and hostility- the inevitable challenges of a public profile

⚠️ The Risks

  • Misinformation amplification- unverified content damages credibility
  • Speed vs accuracy- social media rewards speed; accuracy must always come first
  • Online harassment- journalists with public profiles face organised hostility
  • Political and commercial pressure- social media amplifies editorial interference attempts

💼 Career Paths

  • Social Media Editor- managing a media outlet’s platforms
  • Digital Reporter- covering news primarily for online and social platforms
  • Audience Engagement Manager- building community around media brands
  • Independent Journalist- personal platform, direct audience monetisation

“Social media is not the enemy of journalism, it is a powerful tool journalism must master. At Delight, we train journalists who are fluent in the platforms that now define how stories are told.”
