Natural Language Processing and Chatbot Development: Teaching AI to Understand People
By Delight Technical College | School of Media & AI- Artificial Intelligence | 2026
Every time you receive an automated WhatsApp response, ask Google a question and get a direct answer, or use a voice assistant, you are interacting with Natural Language Processing, the AI branch that enables computers to understand and generate human language. NLP is one of the most commercially valuable areas of AI, and chatbot development is one of the most immediately practical skills for Kenyan AI practitioners. Both are core components of Delight’s Level 6 AI Diploma.
🗣️ What NLP Encompasses
- Text classification- spam detection, sentiment analysis, topic categorisation
- Named entity recognition- identifying people, places, and organisations in text
- Machine translation- translating between languages
- Text summarisation- condensing long documents automatically
- Question answering- extracting direct answers from text
- Text generation- producing coherent, contextually appropriate text from a prompt
🤖 How Chatbots Work- Three Levels
Rule-Based:
If the user says X, reply with Y. Fast to build, limited to anticipated inputs. Effective for specific, well-defined tasks like FAQ responses or appointment booking.
Intent-Recognition:
Identifies the user’s intent from their message and selects an appropriate response. Trained on examples of each intent (significantly more flexible than rule-based systems).
AI-Powered Conversational Agents:
Using large language models to generate contextually appropriate responses to any input like handling unexpected queries, maintaining context across a conversation, and producing surprisingly natural responses.
🌍 Why This Matters in Kenya- WhatsApp Business
