The Key Light- Classic Positions:

• Butterfly/Paramount- light above the face. Associated with glamour photography
• Rembrandt- 45-degree angle, creating a triangle of light on the shadow cheek. Dramatic and painterly
• Loop- slightly to the side and above. Versatile and flattering — widely used commercially
• Split- directly to the side, illuminating exactly half the face. High drama and strong character

Supporting Lights:

• Fill light- reduces shadow intensity; the key-to-fill ratio controls the portrait’s contrast
• Rim/hair light- creates a highlight edge that separates subject from background
• Background light- controls backdrop tone and graduation independently of the subject
