Portrait Photography at Delight: The Art and Craft of Capturing People
By Delight Technical College | School of Media & AI- Photography | 2026
Portrait photography is one of the oldest traditions in visual art and one of the most commercially significant photography specialisations. A great portrait does more than document appearance. It captures something essential about who a person is. At Delight Technical College, portrait photography is taught with the seriousness it deserves, combining technical precision, lighting mastery, and the human skill of making subjects feel safe enough to be truly seen.
💡 Studio Lighting for Portraits- The Foundation
The Key Light- Classic Positions:
- Butterfly/Paramount- light above the face. Associated with glamour photography
- Rembrandt- 45-degree angle, creating a triangle of light on the shadow cheek. Dramatic and painterly
- Loop- slightly to the side and above. Versatile and flattering — widely used commercially
- Split- directly to the side, illuminating exactly half the face. High drama and strong character
Supporting Lights:
- Fill light- reduces shadow intensity; the key-to-fill ratio controls the portrait’s contrast
- Rim/hair light- creates a highlight edge that separates subject from background
- Background light- controls backdrop tone and graduation independently of the subject
📐 Composition in Portrait Photography
- Headshot- tight framing from below shoulders to the top of the head
- Environmental portrait- subject in context, environment communicating character
- Full-length- the complete figure with deliberate use of background and space
- Rule of thirds- placing eyes or face on a compositional third for visual interest
- Eye contact vs off-camera gaze- two entirely different emotional registers
- Negative space- using emptiness to give subjects psychological room
🤝 The Human Dimension- Directing Subjects
Technical perfection means nothing without the ability to bring out your subject’s authentic presence. Most people are uncomfortable in front of a camera and that discomfort shows in photographs. Delight teaches the interpersonal skills that create great portrait sessions:
- Creating a relaxed, safe atmosphere from the moment the subject arrives
- Clear, positive direction- specific and actionable rather than vague
- Managing self-consciousness- helping subjects forget the camera
- Capturing natural expression- moving beyond forced smiles to genuine emotion
- Cultural sensitivity- respecting different comfort levels with being photographed
🖥️ Post-Processing Portrait Images
- Skin retouching- reducing blemishes while preserving natural texture
- Eye enhancement- bringing out detail, clarity, and colour
- Dodging and burning- selectively lightening and darkening for dimension
- Colour grading- enhancing mood without distorting skin tone
- Developing a signature edit style- a consistent aesthetic identity
💼 Portrait Photography Career Paths

- Personal branding photographer- full sessions for entrepreneurs and professionals
- Family and lifestyle photographer- one of Kenya’s most accessible growing markets
- School and institutional photographer- reliable, volume-based work
