Podcasting is one of the fastest-growing media formats in the world and in Kenya, it is experiencing a particular explosion. From political commentary and business advice to comedy, fashion, and storytelling, Kenyan podcasts are finding large and engaged audiences. For Delight Digital Journalism graduates, podcast production is one of the most exciting and accessible career opportunities in the current media landscape.

🎙️ Why Podcasting Is a Major Opportunity

  • Kenya has one of Africa’s highest rates of smartphone ownership driving podcast consumption
  • Podcast advertising revenue is growing significantly, creating monetisation opportunities
  • Barriers to entry are lower than broadcasting (a microphone, software, and an internet connection are the minimum requirements)
  • Podcasts build highly loyal, engaged audiences creating strong communities around content
  • Brands are increasingly sponsoring podcasts as an alternative to traditional advertising

🎧 What Goes Into a Professional Podcast

Content Planning:

  • Defining your niche and audience- who is the podcast for, and what does it offer them?
  • Episode structure- introductions, main content, interviews, and sign-offs
  • Research and preparation- understanding your topic deeply before recording
  • Interview technique- drawing out compelling stories and insights from guests

Technical Production:

  • Microphone selection and placement- the foundation of professional audio
  • Recording environment- minimising room noise and reverb
  • Recording software- Audacity, Adobe Audition, or GarageBand
  • Remote interview recording- Riverside, Squadcast, or Zoom

Post-Production:

  • Audio editing- removing mistakes, pauses, and noise
  • EQ and compression- making voices sound warm, clear, and professional
  • Adding intros, outros, and music
  • Mixing and mastering- preparing the final file for distribution

Distribution and Growth:

  • Podcast hosting platforms- Anchor, Buzzsprout, Spotify for Podcasters
  • Submitting to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts
  • Episode SEO- titles, descriptions, and show notes for discoverability
  • Social media promotion- building an audience beyond the platforms

🎓 How Delight Prepares Podcast Producers

Digital Journalism students at Delight develop the skills most relevant to podcasting: storytelling, interviewing, audio production, content strategy, and audience building. These skills, combined with the practical audio training in the Film Production and Media programmes, provide a strong foundation for podcast production.

“Podcasting gives every journalist, storyteller, and expert a broadcasting studio in their pocket. At Delight, we make sure you know how to use it professionally.”

💡 Many Delight media students launch their own podcasts during their studies building an audience and portfolio content before graduation.
