Some of the most powerful images in human history are photojournalism, photographs that document reality, bear witness to injustice, and change the course of public opinion. Photojournalism is the intersection of two of Delight Technical College’s programme areas: Photography and Digital Journalism. For students passionate about both visual storytelling and social impact, this specialisation offers one of the most meaningful careers in the media industry.

📷 What Is Photojournalism?

Photojournalism is the practice of using photography to document news, events, and human stories for journalistic purposes. Unlike studio or commercial photography, photojournalism operates in real, often unpredictable environments and its primary obligation is to truth.

 

🌍 The Photojournalist’s World

News Photography:

Documenting current events like political gatherings, protests, natural disasters, ceremonies, and breaking news. News photographers work at speed, capturing decisive moments that cannot be repeated.

Feature Photography:

Longer-form visual stories that explore themes, communities, and human experiences over time. Feature photojournalism often produces the most artistically significant work in the genre.

Sports Photography:

Capturing athletic performance, emotion, and competition. Requires exceptional technical skills particularly in managing fast motion and challenging lighting.

Social Documentary Photography:

Long-term projects documenting social realities like poverty, healthcare, community life, environmental change. This is where photojournalism has its greatest social impact.

From the Photography Programme:

• Technical camera mastery- working in any conditions
• Composition for news, capturing decisive moments with strong visual composition
• Working in challenging environments (low light, high crowds, restricted access)
• Image editing and processing for deadline submission

From the Digital Journalism Programme:

• News judgment- understanding what is newsworthy and why
• Media ethics- the responsibilities of photographers toward their subjects
• Caption writing- providing accurate, informative text to accompany images
• Working within editorial frameworks- pitching stories and working with editors

• The principle of truth- photojournalists do not stage or manipulate images
• Subject dignity- respecting the humanity of the people they photograph
• Consent and access- understanding when and how to photograph people
• Trauma-aware photography- working sensitively in environments of distress
