Designing for Different Body Types: Inclusive Pattern Adaptation at Delight
By Delight Technical College | School of Tailoring, Fashion & Design | 2026
Standard fashion patterns and sizing systems are typically developed around a limited set of ‘standard’ body proportions meaning that a significant proportion of real clients require thoughtful pattern adaptation to achieve genuinely flattering, comfortable fit. Delight Technical College’s pattern construction training builds the technical understanding necessary to adapt designs confidently for the genuine diversity of body shapes that real clients present.
📐 Why Standard Patterns Don’t Fit Everyone
Standard sizing systems are built around average proportional relationships between measurements but real bodies vary not just in overall size but in proportion: the relationship between bust, waist, and hip measurements; torso length relative to leg length; shoulder width relative to overall frame; and many other individual variations that a standard pattern, sized only by a single measurement like ‘size 12’, cannot fully accommodate.
🔧 Common Pattern Adaptations
Bust Adjustments:
- Full bust adjustment (FBA)- adding fabric and adjusting dart placement for a larger bust relative to the rest of the pattern
- Small bust adjustment- removing excess fabric for a smaller bust relative to standard pattern proportions
Torso Length Adjustments:
- Lengthening or shortening the bodice for clients whose torso length differs from the pattern’s standard assumption
- Adjusting waist placement accordingly to maintain correct proportional fit
Hip and Waist Adjustments:
- Adjusting the waist-to-hip ratio built into the pattern to match the client’s actual proportions, rather than assuming a standard relationship between these measurements
- Adding or removing ease at the hip for client comfort and movement
Shoulder and Arm Adjustments:
- Adjusting shoulder slope and width for individual variation
- Modifying sleeve cap and armhole shape for comfortable, well-fitted arm movement
🎓 Pattern Adaptation Skills at Delight
The Pattern Construction and Grading module (Level 5, 160 hours) provides the technical foundation that makes confident pattern adaptation possible understanding not just how to follow a standard pattern, but how the underlying geometry of pattern construction relates to body measurement, enabling genuine adaptation rather than guesswork.
👤 The Fitting Consultation as the Starting Point
Effective pattern adaptation begins with accurate, comprehensive body measurement and a skilled fitting consultation that identifies not just standard measurements but the specific proportional characteristics that will require pattern adjustment (a skill developed through extensive practical fitting experience across Delight’s Ladies’ Wear and Gents’ Wear modules).
💼 Why Inclusive Fitting Skills Build Business
- Clients who have struggled to find well-fitting ready-to-wear clothing become deeply loyal customers to a designer who can solve that problem reliably
- Word-of-mouth referral is particularly strong among clients with fitting challenges, who often have networks of others facing similar difficulties
- Confident pattern adaptation skill differentiates a designer from competitors who can only execute standard patterns without genuine fitting expertise
“Every body is different, and the best fashion designers do not force clients to fit a standard pattern (they adapt the pattern to fit the client). At Delight, we build the technical pattern knowledge that makes this genuine inclusivity possible.”
