A strong tailor can make a dress in a day. A strong RPL candidate can also prove they have been making dresses for years. The difference between the two is evidence. In Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), the portfolio describes the learning you have achieved through experience, links it to the requirements of the unit, and verifies it with proof. For Basic Ladies’ Garments Construction, building a good portfolio is half the work of the assessment.

๐Ÿ“ What Is an RPL Portfolio?

A portfolio is an organised collection of documents, photographs and records that show what you can do. It is not a scrapbook and it does not need to be fancy. It needs to be clear, honest and easy for an assessor to follow. Think of it as a tidy folder that answers one question: “How do we know this person can construct ladies’ garments to the standard of this unit?”

๐Ÿ“ธ Photographs That Work

Good photographs are the backbone of a garment portfolio. For each garment:

  • Photograph the front, back and a close-up of at least one detail such as a neckline, zip or hem
  • Show the inside of the garment, because seam finishes reveal a great deal about skill
  • Use daylight and a plain background where possible
  • Label every photo with the garment type, fabric and approximate date

๐Ÿงพ Records That Prove Regular Work

  • Order books or notebooks listing client names, garments and delivery dates
  • Receipts, invoices or M-Pesa messages showing payment for garments
  • Measurement cards or client record sheets
  • Job cards or work records from an employer

Client privacy matters. Where possible, remove or cover personal details that are not necessary, and ask permission before sharing client information.

๐Ÿค Third-Party Evidence

Assessors place real value on statements from other people. Useful sources include:

  • A current or former employer confirming your role and the type of garments you made
  • A long-standing client describing what you have made for them
  • The person who trained you, such as a master tailor or relative
  • A fellow tailor or shop owner who has seen your work regularly

A short signed letter with the person’s name, contact details and a clear description of what they observed is usually enough.

๐ŸŽ“ Where This Fits in the Delight Learning Guide

Unit 2: Basic Ladies’ Garments Construction

  • Module I | Level 3 (Artisan) | Term One
  • One of the units that can be supported through a portfolio plus a practical demonstration

โš ๏ธ Common Portfolio Mistakes

  • Including photographs of garments that someone else made
  • Submitting evidence with no dates or explanation
  • Overloading the portfolio with fifty similar garments instead of choosing a range
  • Forgetting to link the evidence to the skills in the unit
  • Leaving the portfolio to the last minute

๐Ÿงฐ A Simple Portfolio Checklist

  • A short personal summary describing your experience in ladies’ garments
  • Six to ten well-chosen garments with clear photographs
  • Records showing regular work over time
  • At least two statements from other people
  • Copies of any certificates or training records

“A good portfolio does not shout. It simply lays out the facts so clearly that the assessor can see your competence for themselves.”
