Broadcast Journalism vs Digital Journalism: Understanding Both Worlds at Delight
By Delight Technical College | School of Media & AI- Digital Journalism | 2026
When most people think of journalism, they think of one of two images: a television news presenter delivering the evening bulletin, or a reporter typing a story for an online publication. These two images represent the two dominant traditions in Kenyan journalism, broadcast and digital, and they are more different than they might initially appear. Delight Technical College’s Digital Journalism Diploma specifically prepares students for the digital journalism landscape while equipping them to understand and work across both traditions.
📺 Broadcast Journalism- The Traditional Powerhouse
What Broadcast Journalism Is:
Broadcast journalism is journalism delivered through television and (radio real-time, personality-driven, and capable of reaching millions of Kenyans simultaneously). Kenya has a rich and influential broadcast journalism tradition, with stations like KBC, Citizen TV, NTV, K24, and dozens of radio stations serving as primary news sources for millions of households.
The Skills of Broadcast Journalism:
- On-camera presence- projecting authority, clarity, and credibility on screen
- Scripting for broadcast- writing for the ear rather than the eye
- Live presenting- delivering breaking news and commentary in real time without autocue
- Package production- the short pre-produced story that forms the core of TV news
- Interviewing on camera- eliciting newsworthy responses from public figures and eyewitnesses
The Limitations:
- High barriers to entry- broadcast requires expensive equipment, transmission infrastructure, and broadcast licences
- Linear consumption- audiences must watch when broadcasts are scheduled, not on demand
- Limited interactivity- traditional broadcast is one-directional
💻 Digital Journalism- The New Landscape
What Digital Journalism Is:
Digital journalism encompasses all journalism produced for distribution through the internet news websites, social media platforms, podcasts, YouTube channels, email newsletters, and app-based news services. It is the fastest-growing journalism sector in Kenya and the primary area of employment growth in the industry.
The Skills of Digital Journalism:
- Multi-format storytelling- producing text, audio, video, and graphics for a single story
- SEO and digital distribution- ensuring content reaches the intended audience
- Social media journalism- using platforms both as sources and distribution channels
- Audience engagement- managing the two-way relationship between journalist and reader
- Analytics- understanding what works and continuously improving content performance
The Advantages:
- Low barriers to entry- a smartphone and internet connection enable digital journalism
- On-demand consumption- audiences access content when and where they want
- Global reach- digital journalism is not limited by geography or broadcast infrastructure
- Interactive and personalised- audiences can respond, comment, and shape the conversation
🔗 How the Two Traditions Converge
The distinction between broadcast and digital journalism is increasingly blurry. Television stations have active digital and social media presences. Digital news outlets produce video content. Broadcast journalists build personal brands on social media. Delight’s Digital Journalism programme prepares students for this converged environment:
- Video journalism skills- producing broadcast-quality video for digital platforms
- Audio journalism- podcast production skills that translate directly to radio journalism
- Live social journalism- the digital equivalent of live broadcast
- Multi-platform storytelling- the ability to tell a single story across all media simultaneously
