🎬 What Is VFX in Modern Production?

VFX encompasses any visual element in a film or video that is added, removed, or modified through digital post-production processes rather than captured in-camera during the live shoot. Modern VFX ranges from invisible, practical enhancements to elaborate creative constructions:

• Background replacement or enhancement- changing or improving the background visible behind actors
• Object removal- digitally removing unwanted elements from footage (a microphone that dipped into frame, a vehicle that appears in an otherwise period-accurate scene)
• Logo and title animation- creating animated brand identities and show titles
• Colour and environment enhancements- extending a partial set or improving practical location footage
• Motion graphics integration- compositing designed graphic elements into live footage

🛠️ Core VFX Techniques Taught at Delight

Green Screen / Chroma Key:

Shooting subjects against a solid green or blue background, then digitally replacing that background in post-production with any desired backdrop. The foundation technique for many VFX workflows, used extensively in broadcast news, corporate video, and narrative production.

Tracking:

Analysing camera movement within a shot to allow digital elements to be added that move consistently with the camera (essential for integrating any digital content into footage where the camera is not perfectly static).

Compositing:

Combining multiple visual layers like live footage, digital backgrounds, graphic elements, titles into a single, coherent final image. Compositing is the fundamental VFX skill that underlies virtually all other effects work.

Basic Motion Graphics Integration:

Adding animated text, graphics, and brand elements into footage- a heavily used VFX application in corporate, commercial, and social media video production.
