Fashion illustration is one of the most exciting and creatively fulfilling skills in the designer’s toolkit and at Delight Technical College, it is a dedicated module at Level 5 that students consistently describe as one of their favourites.

🎨 What Is Fashion Illustration?

Fashion illustration is the art of communicating a fashion idea visually through drawing, painting, or digital illustration. It is used by designers to:

• Explore and develop ideas before committing to production
• Communicate designs to clients, manufacturers, and team members
• Create portfolio pieces that showcase a design aesthetic
• Build the ‘look book’ or collection overview for a fashion line

✏️ What You Will Learn

The Fashion Figure:

• Proportions of the fashion croquis (the idealised figure used in fashion drawing)
• Dynamic poses that show garments in movement
• Male, female, and children’s figures

Garment Rendering:

• Drawing different fabric types, for example, how silk looks different from denim
• Rendering texture, drape, and volume
• Showing garment details like zips, buttons, pleats, collars

Colour & Media:

• Using pencils, markers, water colour, and mixed media
• Colour theory applied to fashion design
• Introduction to digital illustration tools

Portfolio Development:

• Presenting illustrations professionally
• Building a cohesive collection on paper
