Children’s wear is one of the most consistently profitable segments of the fashion industry. Parents spend significantly on clothing for their children and the market demands quality, safety, durability, and style. At Delight Technical College, Children’s Wear is a specialist Level 6 module that prepares students to design and produce for this lucrative market.

👶 About the Children’s Wear Module

  • Level: 6 | Term: Five (Module V)
  • Total Hours: 240 | Hours per Week: 22

With 240 hours dedicated to this module, students gain deep, practical expertise in every aspect of children’s wear design and production.

📐 What Makes Children’s Wear Unique?

Designing for children is not simply scaling down adult patterns. It requires specific knowledge and skills:

Safety First:

  • No small buttons, sharp embellishments, or loose threads that could harm children
  • Non-toxic dyes and skin-safe fabrics
  • Flame-resistant considerations for certain garment categories

Fit & Movement:

  • Children grow fast- patterns must account for growth room
  • Garments must allow full freedom of movement for active play
  • Elastic waistbands, adjustable fastenings, and easy-on/off features

Durability:

  • Children’s clothing is subjected to intense wear (seams must be reinforced)
  • Fabrics must be washable, colourfast, and resilient

Aesthetic:

  • Age-appropriate designs that children love and parents approve
  • Seasonal collections, school uniforms, and occasion wear

💼 Business Opportunities in Children’s Wear

  • Children’s clothing boutique owner
  • School uniform supplier (a major market in Kenya)
  • Baby and toddler wear designer
  • Children’s occasion wear specialist (christenings, birthdays, events)
  • Sports and activity wear for children

“In Kenya, every family with school-age children needs uniforms. That alone is a multi-billion shilling market. Children’s wear is not a niche, it is a necessity.”
