Beadwork and Embroidery: Ancient Crafts With Modern Commercial Power
By Delight Technical College | School of Tailoring, Fashion & Design | 2026
Among the many specialised skills taught within Delight Technical College’s fashion programme, beadwork and embroidery hold a particularly special place. These are ancient African craft traditions, practised for centuries as expressions of culture, identity, and artistry that have found a powerful new life in the contemporary global fashion market. At Delight, we train students to master these techniques and build commercial value from them.
💎 What Is Beadwork?
Beadwork is the art of using beads (made from glass, shell, bone, plastic, or other materials) to create decorative elements on garments, accessories, and jewellery. In the Kenyan and East African context, beadwork is most powerfully associated with Maasai culture where intricate, colour-coded beadwork communicates age, status, marital state, and identity.
Contemporary fashion has embraced beadwork enthusiastically from beaded bridal gowns and occasion wear to beaded handbags, belts, and jewellery. Beadwork adds premium value to any garment or accessory.
🧵 What Is Embroidery?
Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabric with needlework using thread, yarn, and other materials to create images, patterns, and textures on cloth. It encompasses:
- Hand embroidery- using needles and thread to create intricate designs by hand
- Machine embroidery- using specialised sewing machine attachments to create embroidered designs
- Goldwork and metallic thread embroidery adding luxury shimmer and texture
- Smocking- gathering fabric into decorative patterns
- Beaded embroidery- combining beads and thread for maximum decorative effect
