Artificial intelligence voice generation, the ability to create realistic synthetic speech from text, including voices that convincingly replicate specific real individuals, is one of the most ethically significant AI developments affecting both journalism and media production. Delight Technical College addresses AI voice generation as a technology that media professionals must understand, use responsibly, and be equipped to identify when it is used deceptively.

🗣️ What AI Voice Generation Can Do

Modern AI voice generation systems can:

  • Convert written text to natural-sounding speech in various languages including Kiswahili- enabling voiceover production without human voice talent
  • Clone a specific person’s voice from relatively small audio samples- enabling synthetic speech that is difficult to distinguish from the genuine article
  • Generate speech in multiple emotional registers, accents, and speaking styles
  • Produce voiceover content in seconds rather than the hours required for studio recording sessions

🎬 Legitimate Uses in Media Production

Voiceover and Narration:

AI voice generation can legitimately reduce the cost and time of voiceover production for explainer videos, tutorials, and informational content where the specific character of a human voice is less critical than clarity and intelligibility.

Accessibility:

Converting written content to audio making written journalism and publications accessible to audiences with visual impairments or reading difficulties.

Translation and Localisation:

Generating voiceovers in multiple languages to make content accessible across language barriers, particularly relevant for East African content creators reaching diverse linguistic audiences.

⚠️ The Significant Ethical Risks

Deepfake Audio for Disinformation:

AI voice cloning can create convincing fake audio of public figures saying things they never said (a serious and growing threat to journalistic integrity and public information). Kenya has already experienced cases of politically motivated audio manipulation, making this a directly relevant concern for Kenyan journalism students.

Non-Consensual Voice Use:

Cloning someone’s voice without their consent, for any purpose, raises serious privacy and identity rights concerns, even when not used for explicitly deceptive purposes.

Devaluing Human Voice Performance:

The displacement of human voice artists, narrators, and voiceover actors through AI voice generation has significant economic implications for people whose careers depend on their vocal work.

🔍 Detection and Verification

Delight’s journalism curriculum addresses AI voice detection. The emerging tools and critical listening skills that allow journalists and media professionals to identify potentially AI-generated audio content, an increasingly important verification competency as synthetic audio quality improves.

🎓 How Delight Prepares Graduates

Both Digital Journalism ethics training and AI ethics curriculum address voice generation directly as a tool that media professionals may legitimately use in some contexts, must understand how to detect when used deceptively, and must approach with clear ethical principles around consent and authentic representation.

“A journalist who cannot tell a real voice from a synthetic one is a journalist who can be deceived. At Delight, we train media professionals who understand AI voice technology well enough to use it responsibly and recognise it when it is used against them.”
