By Delight Technical College | School of Media & AI- Film Production | 2026

While drone and aerial footage is often discussed primarily as a technical capability (a way to capture impressive establishing shots) the most skilled filmmakers use aerial cinematography as a genuine storytelling tool, not just a visual flourish. Delight Technical College’s Film Production curriculum encourages students to think about aerial perspective as a deliberate narrative and emotional device, not simply spectacle.

🎬 Beyond the Establishing Shot- Aerial Storytelling Functions

Revealing Scale and Context:

Aerial footage can reveal the relationship between a character or subject and their broader environment in ways ground-level footage cannot showing isolation within a vast landscape, or connection within a bustling community, communicating meaning through scale relationships.

Transition and Pacing:

Aerial shots can serve as elegant transitional devices between scenes or sequences, providing the audience a visual and emotional ‘breath’ between more intimate ground-level storytelling moments.

Symbolic and Thematic Resonance:

The literal elevation of an aerial perspective can carry symbolic weight suggesting transcendence, perspective, freedom, or distance, depending on how it is deployed within the broader narrative and visual language of a film.

Tracking Journey and Movement:

Following a subject’s physical journey from above like a vehicle travelling a long distance or a character walking through a changing landscape can communicate the passage of time and distance more efficiently and evocatively than multiple ground-level shots.

🎯 Deliberate Aerial Shot Planning

Rather than treating drone footage as a generic addition captured opportunistically, skilled filmmakers plan aerial shots as deliberately as any other shot in their production:

  • Identifying specifically what story purpose each aerial shot serves before filming
  • Planning camera movement (rising, descending, tracking, orbiting) to match the emotional and narrative intention of the moment
  • Considering how aerial footage will be edited alongside ground-level footage- the transition points and pacing relationships
  • Understanding that aerial footage, like any shot, should serve the story rather than existing purely for visual spectacle

🌍 Aerial Storytelling in Kenyan Contexts

Kenya’s dramatic and varied landscapes (from urban Nairobi to the Rift Valley, from coastal regions to highland agriculture) offer extraordinary aerial storytelling material for filmmakers willing to think beyond generic establishing shots toward genuinely purposeful aerial narrative.

🎓 Aerial Cinematography in Delight’s Curriculum

While operational drone licensing sits outside Delight’s core curriculum (given the regulatory requirements involved), the storytelling and shot-planning principles that make aerial footage genuinely effective are taught as part of broader cinematography and visual storytelling training preparing students to plan and integrate aerial footage purposefully if and when they develop drone operation capability.

“A drone shot that exists only to show off technical capability is forgettable. A drone shot that reveals something essential about the story is unforgettable. At Delight, we train filmmakers to pursue the latter.”
