Shirts, Trousers and Shorts: How RPL Recognises Your Gents’ Garment Construction Experience

By Delight Technical College | School of Tailoring, Fashion & Design- RPL | 2026

Gents’ garments have a reputation for being unforgiving. A crooked shirt collar is visible from across the room, and trousers that do not sit properly are returned within a week. Tailors who make menswear for a living learn quickly, because their clients tell them exactly what is wrong. That demanding experience is valuable and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) offers a way to have it formally recognised through the unit Basic Gents’ Garments Construction.

๐Ÿ‘” What Basic Gents’ Garments Construction Covers

This unit introduces the skills needed to construct basic menswear. It includes:

  • Taking men’s body measurements accurately, including chest, waist, hip, inside leg and shoulder
  • Understanding the differences between ladies’ and gents’ patterns and proportions
  • Cutting and preparing fabric for common gents’ garments such as shirts, trousers and shorts
  • Constructing collars, cuffs, plackets and pockets neatly
  • Inserting zips, fly fronts and waistbands
  • Applying buttons and buttonholes
  • Pressing and finishing to a smart, professional standard
  • Checking fit, comfort and balance before delivery

๐ŸŽ“ Where This Unit Sits in the Delight Learning Guide

Unit 3: Basic Gents’ Garments Construction

  • Module I | Level 3 (Artisan) | Term One
  • The third and final Term One unit
  • Completing Units 1 to 3 leads to the Level 3 (Artisan) certificate

๐Ÿ” What Makes Menswear Different

Experienced tailors know that menswear demands precision in places where ladies’ wear is more forgiving:

  • Symmetry- collars, cuffs, pocket flaps and trouser legs must match
  • Crisp pressing- sharp edges and clean creases define quality
  • Structure- waistbands, plackets and fly fronts must hold their shape
  • Consistency- a client who orders three shirts expects all three to match

If you can deliver these things reliably, you already have much of the competence the unit describes.

๐Ÿงต Turning Experience into Evidence

  • A school-uniform tailor can present trousers and shirts made in bulk, showing consistent construction across many pieces
  • A tailor who has worked in a menswear shop can present garments, job cards and an employer’s statement
  • A self-employed tailor can present client photographs, order records and customer references

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Questions an Assessor May Ask

  • How do you take the inside-leg and waist measurements, and what do you do if a client’s weight changes between fittings?
  • How do you keep the two sides of a collar matching?
  • What is the difference between a plain trouser fly and a zip fly, and how do you sew each?
  • How do you prevent a waistband from stretching out of shape?

๐Ÿš€ Your Next Step

  • Identify the gents’ garments you make most often
  • Pick the best examples and photograph them inside and out
  • Gather statements from an employer or regular clients
  • Speak to an RPL adviser about how your experience matches the unit

โ“ What If I Have Only Made Menswear for Family?

Making garments for family and friends is real experience, and it counts. The difficulty is that assessors prefer evidence that other people have seen and valued your work. If most of your menswear has been made at home, consider making a small set of shirts or trousers for someone outside your household, keep simple records of the order, and ask for a short written statement when you deliver. Combine this with photographs and any statements from people who have watched you sew, such as a trainer or a neighbouring tailor.

“A menswear tailor who has worked for years has already been assessed by clients who notice every flaw. RPL simply adds the formal recognition that goes with it.”
