Delight Technical College understands the diverse linguistic backgrounds of its students, especially from Francophone countries, and aims to provide a seamless learning experience for those whose first language is French. To support Francophone students in adapting to a bilingual environment in Kenya, Delight offers a specialized Language-Bridge Program. This program is designed to help Francophone students transition smoothly into an English and Swahili-speaking academic setting, ensuring they are fully equipped to succeed both in their studies and in their careers.

Key Features of Delight’s Language-Bridge Program:

  1. Intensive Language Support
The Language-Bridge Program provides intensive English language courses tailored to meet the needs of Francophone students. These courses focus on key language skills such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and are designed to build students’ confidence in using English in academic and everyday settings.

    • English Proficiency: Courses aim to raise students’ English proficiency to the level needed for academic success at Delight. Emphasis is placed on academic writing, reading comprehension, and effective communication.
    • Swahili Introduction: Given that Swahili is widely spoken in Kenya, the program also includes an introduction to Swahili, helping students integrate into local culture and communicate more effectively with their peers.
  2. Cultural Orientation and Immersion
The Language-Bridge Program offers cultural orientation sessions to help Francophone students adjust to Kenyan society. This includes an understanding of local customs, traditions, and social norms, helping students feel more comfortable and confident in their new environment.

    • Cultural Exchange: Students are encouraged to engage with their Kenyan peers and other international students, promoting cultural exchange and fostering an inclusive learning community.
    • Community Building: Regular social events and group activities give students the chance to practice their language skills in real-life situations while forming connections with others.
  3. Academic Support for Language Transition
To ease the transition into academic coursework, students in the Language-Bridge Program are given academic support tailored to their needs.

    • Tutoring Services: One-on-one tutoring and study groups are available to help students strengthen their understanding of course materials in English.
    • Language Assistance: Professors and teaching assistants provide extra support to Francophone students, ensuring they are able to understand course content, participate in class discussions, and complete assignments effectively.
  4. Integrated Learning Environment
Students enrolled in the Language-Bridge Program are integrated into the same academic environment as other students, with a special focus on language proficiency. This allows Francophone students to gradually become comfortable with the demands of an English-speaking academic setting while still receiving necessary language support.

    • Interactive Learning: The program emphasizes active participation, where students engage in discussions, presentations, and collaborative learning in both English and Swahili.
    • Use of Technology: The program incorporates online resources and apps to enhance language learning, providing students with flexibility and access to additional learning tools.
  5. Accredited English Certification
Upon successful completion of the Language-Bridge Program, students receive an accredited English proficiency certificate. This certification is a valuable credential that not only demonstrates the student’s improved language skills but also boosts their employability and readiness for global opportunities.
  6. Pathway to Degree Programs
The Language-Bridge Program is designed to act as a bridge to full participation in Delight’s academic programs. Once students reach the required level of English proficiency, they seamlessly transition into their chosen degree or diploma courses.

    • Tailored Academic Pathways: Students are placed in programs based on their proficiency and chosen career track, including fashion, media, technology, hospitality, and more.
    • Continued Language Support: While transitioning into their technical courses, students continue to receive ongoing language support, ensuring they remain successful throughout their academic journey.
  7. Support for Post-Graduation Careers
The Language-Bridge Program also prepares students for the workforce by ensuring they can effectively communicate in professional settings, both in English and in Swahili, should they choose to work in Kenya or other parts of East Africa.

    • Internships and Job Readiness: Students are encouraged to participate in internships and workshops designed to improve their career readiness, with a focus on enhancing communication skills in a professional context.
    • Networking Opportunities: Through various events, students can connect with industry professionals and potential employers, both locally and regionally.

Why the Language-Bridge Program is Important for Francophone Students:

  • Improved Academic Success: Language barriers can often hinder academic performance, but Delight’s Language-Bridge Program equips Francophone students with the necessary language skills to excel in their coursework.
  • Cultural Integration: The program helps students feel more integrated into Kenyan society, easing their social interactions and allowing them to build relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Global Competency: English is a global business and academic language, and proficiency in both English and Swahili opens doors to numerous opportunities across Africa and the world.

Conclusion:

Delight’s Language-Bridge Program is an essential part of the college’s commitment to supporting international students, particularly those from Francophone countries, as they pursue their studies in Kenya. By providing comprehensive language training, cultural immersion, and academic support, Delight ensures that Francophone students are not only able to succeed academically but also thrive in a multicultural and dynamic environment. This program is a key part of Delight’s broader mission to foster regional integration and provide high-quality education to students from across Africa.
