Years at the Machine, No Certificate? How RPL Recognises Your Sewing Machine Skills

By Delight Technical College | School of Tailoring, Fashion & Design- RPL | 2026

From Gikomba to Kamukunji, in village shops and backyard workshops across Kenya, thousands of people have spent years at a sewing machine without ever holding a certificate that says so. They can thread a machine in seconds, hear a tension problem before they see it, and turn out a school uniform before lunch. Yet when a college, an employer or a bank asks for proof, they have nothing to show. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) was created for exactly this situation and Sewing Machine Operations, the very first unit in Delight Technical College’s Fashion Design Learning Guide, is one of the easiest places to begin.

๐Ÿ“œ What Is RPL in Plain Words?

Recognition of Prior Learning is a process used to identify, assess and certify what a person already knows and can do. The most important idea is simple: the system looks at the outcome, not at how, when or where the learning happened. Whether you learned from an aunt, an apprenticeship, a roadside fundi or a lot of patient practice, what counts is whether you can now perform the task to the required standard.

In Kenya, RPL is coordinated by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) under the Kenya National Qualifications Framework Act of 2014, working with bodies such as TVET CDACC, TVETA and NITA.

๐Ÿงต What Sewing Machine Operations Covers

This unit is the foundation of every other garment skill. A competent machine operator can:

  • Identify the main parts of a machine and explain what each one does
  • Thread the machine and wind and insert the bobbin correctly
  • Select the right needle and thread for the fabric being sewn
  • Adjust stitch length and tension to produce balanced, even stitches
  • Sew straight lines, curves, corners and seams at a controlled speed
  • Clean, oil and carry out basic maintenance
  • Diagnose common faults such as skipped stitches, thread breakage and puckered seams
  • Work safely- good posture, safe handling of needles and safe use of electrical equipment

Experienced tailors often do all of this without thinking. RPL simply asks you to show it.

๐ŸŽ“ Where This Unit Sits in the Delight Learning Guide

Unit 1: Sewing Machine Operations

  • Module I | Level 3 (Artisan) | Term One
  • One of three Term One units, alongside Basic Ladies’ Garments Construction and Basic Gents’ Garments Construction
  • Level 3 is the starting point of the pathway, with entry at KCPE or equivalent

โœ… Are You a Good RPL Candidate?

You may be a strong candidate for this unit if you:

  • Sew regularly, whether for income or for your family
  • Learned through apprenticeship, family, self-teaching or on-the-job practice
  • Can set up a machine and fix routine problems without calling for help
  • Have never been formally assessed or certified for these skills

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ What Evidence Can Support Your Case?

RPL assessment usually combines a portfolio of evidence with a practical demonstration. Evidence that helps includes:

  • Photographs of garments you have sewn, showing seams and finishing
  • A written or spoken description of the machines you have used
  • Letters or contact details from employers, clients or the person who trained you
  • Order books, receipts or job cards showing regular sewing work
  • Any earlier certificates, however informal

The assessor will want to see that your evidence is genuinely yours, current, and linked to the skills in the unit.

๐Ÿš€ How to Start

  • Speak to an RPL adviser or counsellor about your goal and the qualification that fits your experience
  • Gather your evidence and organise it clearly
  • Attend the assessment, which will usually include a practical demonstration and questions
  • If you are found competent, you receive recognition for the unit; if there are gaps, you can train for those gaps only

“You do not need to sit in a classroom to prove what your hands already know. You only need someone qualified to see it, measure it and certify it.”

๐Ÿ’ก Ready to turn your sewing experience into a nationally recognised qualification? Ask our admissions team how RPL can work for Unit 1. Call +254 722 533 771 or visit Delight Technical College at Muindi Mbingu Street, Nairobi.
