African fashion is having a moment and that moment has been decades in the making. From the global runways of Paris, Milan, and New York to the boutiques of Nairobi, Lagos, and Accra, African designers and African aesthetics are commanding international attention and respect. Delight Technical College is proud to be part of this cultural and creative renaissance celebrating African fashion while training the next generation of designers to carry it forward.
🌍 What Is African Fashion?
African fashion is not a single aesthetic, it is a rich, diverse tapestry of styles, traditions, textiles, and design philosophies that vary across the continent’s 54 countries. In the Kenyan and East African context, key elements include:
- Ankara (African Print)- the bold, colourful wax print fabric that has become a global symbol of African fashion
- Kitenge- a similar printed cotton fabric, deeply woven into Kenyan cultural and everyday life
- Kanga- a versatile printed cloth worn across East Africa, rich with cultural messages and symbolism
- Kikoy- a striped cotton cloth traditionally worn along the Kenyan coast, increasingly popular in contemporary fashion
- Maasai Beadwork- the intricate, colour-coded beadwork of the Maasai people, celebrated globally as one of Africa’s most distinctive art forms
- Contemporary African Design- modern garments that incorporate African textiles, prints, and aesthetic traditions within contemporary silhouettes and construction
🎓 African Fashion at Delight- Curriculum
African fashion is not a single course at Delight, it is woven throughout the curriculum:
- Pattern construction modules incorporate African fabric handling- Ankara and Kitenge require specific cutting and construction approaches
- Fabric decoration modules celebrate African embroidery, beadwork, and surface design traditions
- Fashion illustration includes drawing African silhouettes and styling for African garments
- The Lingerie and Occasion Wear elective often produces African bridal and occasion wear
- Fashion entrepreneurship training addresses the African fashion market specifically
🌟 KITFest- Delight’s Celebration of African Creativity
