What Is CBET and Why Does Delight Technical College Use It?
By Delight Technical College | Academic Framework | 2026
If you have looked at Delight Technical College’s curriculum or spoken to one of our tutors, you have probably heard the term CBET. It stands for Competency-Based Education and Training and it is the framework that drives everything we teach at Delight. But what exactly does it mean, and why does it matter to you as a student?
📚 What Is CBET?
CBET is a training approach where the measure of success is not simply how many hours you sat in a classroom but whether you can actually DO the job. It shifts the focus from input (what you were taught) to output (what you can demonstrate).
Under CBET, every unit of learning is tied to a specific, measurable competency. You are assessed on your ability to perform real tasks to industry standards not just pass a written exam.
🎯 How CBET Works at Delight
- 70–80% of all training is practical and hands-on
- Students build real portfolios of completed work throughout their studies
- Assessment is continuous not just at the end of the year
- Each module has clearly defined skills outcomes that students must demonstrate
- Industry standards set by CDACC and NITA define what ‘competent’ looks like
🧵 CBET in the Fashion School
In our School of Tailoring, Fashion & Design, CBET means a Level 3 student is not just told how to construct a ladies’ garment they construct one, have it assessed, and refine it until it meets professional standards. By the time they graduate, they have a portfolio of completed garments, not just a set of notes.
💻 CBET in the Media & AI School
In the School of Media & AI, CBET means film students produce actual short films, photographers build real photo portfolios, and AI students work on live projects. Employers see what graduates can do not just what grade they earned.
🏆 Why CBET Produces Better Graduates
Traditional education often produces graduates who know a subject but struggle to perform in the workplace. CBET closes this gap. Delight graduates leave with demonstrable skills, industry portfolios, and entrepreneurial capacity making them immediately valuable to employers and clients.
“At Delight, we don’t just teach you fashion or film we prepare you to walk into any studio, workshop, or boardroom and perform from day one.”
