1. Introduction
Delight Technical College (DTC) recognizes the vital role that education plays in building a sustainable future. As a technical and creative institution, we are committed to integrating sustainability into every aspect of our teaching, learning, operations, and community engagement. Our goal is to nurture a generation of innovative professionals who value environmental responsibility, ethical practices, and social impact within their respective industries.
This policy outlines our commitment to sustainability across the college, with a special focus on the Fashion Design and Garment Making Department, which serves as a model for creative sustainability through practical innovation.
2. Purpose
The purpose of this Sustainability Policy is to:
– Embed environmental and social responsibility into DTC’s curriculum, operations, and culture.
– Promote sustainable design, production, and consumption practices.
– Encourage staff, students, and partners to make conscious decisions that support long-term ecological balance and community wellbeing.
– Serve as a framework for continuous improvement toward a more sustainable institution.
3. Scope
This policy applies to:
– All departments, programs, and administrative units of Delight Technical College.
– All staff, students, and partners of the institution.
– College-related activities including teaching, learning, events, procurement, waste management, and community outreach.
The Fashion Department, in particular, shall lead sustainability initiatives through creative projects, practical demonstrations, and awareness programs.
4. Our Commitments
a) Sustainable Education and Curriculum
– Integrate sustainability concepts into course content across all departments, particularly in fashion, design, and technical training programs.
– Encourage project-based learning that focuses on upcycling, recycling, and zero-waste production.
– Support students to research, innovate, and showcase sustainable fashion and design solutions through exhibitions, competitions, and events.
b) Sustainable Production and Resource Management
– Encourage the use of upcycled, recycled, or locally sourced materials in practical courses and projects.
– Implement waste segregation across the college to separate recyclables, organic waste, and non-recyclables.
– Reduce resource consumption by promoting energy efficiency, water conservation, and responsible use of materials in workshops and offices.
c) Community Engagement and Social Impact
– Participate in and host sustainability-focused events, workshops, and awareness campaigns.
– Strengthen partnerships with organizations and networks promoting sustainable development, especially within Kenya’s creative and technical education sectors.
– Encourage donations of reusable materials, garments, and supplies to local communities, supporting social welfare and circular economy practices.
d) Institutional Operations
– Ensure all procurement and administrative processes consider environmental and ethical standards.
– Promote paperless communication and digital documentation where possible.
– Create green spaces within the college premises to enhance environmental health and learning experiences.
5. Implementation and Responsibility
– The College Management shall oversee the implementation of this policy and ensure adequate resources are allocated.
– The Sustainability Committee, including representatives from various departments, shall coordinate initiatives, monitor progress, and recommend improvements.
– Tutors and trainers shall integrate sustainability into their teaching methods and classroom practices.
– Students are encouraged to actively participate in sustainability clubs, projects, and advocacy activities.
6. Monitoring and Evaluation
Delight Technical College will:
– Review its sustainability activities every three months to assess progress and impact.
– Document success stories, challenges, and lessons learned for continual improvement.
– Encourage regular feedback from staff and students on sustainability practices and ideas for innovation.
7. Review and Continuous Improvement
This policy shall be reviewed every three months to reflect emerging trends, best practices, and institutional growth.
