At Delight Technical College, dressmaking is more than just crafting clothes — it’s a blend of creativity, precision, and empowerment. Our NITA-accredited Dressmaking program (Grade III, II, I) is designed to guide learners through every stage of skill development — from the very basics of fabric cutting to the finesse of creating elegant, well-fitted garments.

Whether you’re pursuing a career in fashion, planning to start a business, or want to perfect your passion, Delight equips you with the right tools to succeed in the world of dressmaking.

A Step-by-Step Learning Path: Grade III to Grade I

Our Dressmaking course is delivered in three progressive levels, each building upon the last, ensuring learners gain both technical and creative competence.

Grade III – Foundational Level

Perfect for beginners, this level introduces students to:

  • Basic sewing techniques (hand and machine)
  • Types and functions of sewing tools
  • Fabric types and properties
  • Simple garment construction (skirts, blouses, basic dresses)
  • Pattern layout, cutting, and basic finishing

By the end of Grade III, learners can confidently produce basic wearables and understand the sewing process from start to finish.

Grade II – Intermediate Level

At this stage, students delve into:

  • Advanced garment construction techniques
  • Making stylish dresses, children’s wear, and fitted blouses
  • Taking client measurements and fitting skills
  • Decorative design elements (pleats, gathers, collars, cuffs)
  • Finishing techniques for retail-quality garments

This level polishes skills and introduces design thinking, preparing students for small-scale production and customization.

Grade I – Advanced Level

This final level prepares learners to become professionals and entrepreneurs by focusing on:

  • Designer dressmaking and occasion wear
  • Garment alterations and adjustments
  • Advanced fitting and finishing
  • Garment costing, pricing, and marketing
  • Supervisory and business skills for workshop or boutique management

By completion, students are capable of producing high-end garments and managing dressmaking ventures independently.

Why Study Dressmaking at Delight?

  • Hands-On Training: Practical sessions are at the heart of learning. Students spend most of their time designing, cutting, sewing, and fitting garments in our modern, fully equipped workshops.
  • Expert Trainers: Our instructors combine professional experience with mentoring to provide both technical guidance and creative inspiration.
  • Fashion Showcases & Projects: Learners showcase their work through regular exhibitions and college fashion events — a great way to build confidence and a portfolio.
  • Industry Attachment: Students get the opportunity to learn in real work environments through internships and attachments.

NITA Certification – A Trusted Qualification

The program is accredited by Kenya’s National Industrial Training Authority (NITA). With each level examined and certified by NITA, students gain:

  • Nationally recognized qualifications
  • Employment readiness for formal or informal sectors
  • Access to licensing opportunities for self-employment

Who Can Apply?

This program is ideal for:

  • School leavers or graduates
  • Stay-at-home parents looking to earn from home
  • Aspiring fashion designers and entrepreneurs
  • Self-taught dressmakers seeking formal certification

Career Pathways

  • Dressmakers and custom tailors
  • Clothing line entrepreneurs
  • Fashion workshop assistants or supervisors
  • Designers specializing in women’s wear
