Level 3 Fashion Design: What Happens in Your Very First Term at Delight
By Delight Technical College | School of Tailoring, Fashion & Design | 2026
Starting a new course can feel overwhelming especially if you have never touched a sewing machine before. But that is exactly the kind of student Level 3 at Delight Technical College is designed for. Here is a detailed look at what happens in your very first term as a fashion student at Delight.
📅 Module I- Level 3, Term One
Term One at Level 3 consists of three units that take you from zero to garment construction. Here is exactly what each unit covers:
Unit 1: Sewing Machine Operations (50 hours | 5 hours/week)
Before you can make a garment, you need to master your most important tool: the sewing machine. This unit covers:
- Parts of a sewing machine and their functions
- Threading, bobbin winding, and tension adjustment
- Stitch types and their applications
- Safe operation and basic machine maintenance
- Straight stitching, zigzag, and decorative stitches
By the end of this unit, you will be completely comfortable operating an industrial sewing machine, a skill that takes some students weeks to acquire elsewhere, but which Delight’s hands-on approach delivers in hours.
Unit 2: Construction of Simple Ladies’ Garments (150 hours | 14 hours/week)
Your first major practical unit. You will produce real women’s garments as well as learning:
- Body measurements and how to take them accurately
- Basic pattern construction for ladies’ wear
- Cutting fabric safely and accurately
- Constructing simple skirts, blouses, and dresses
- Seams, hems, darts, and basic garment finishing
Unit 3: Construction of Simple Gents’ Garments (150 hours | 14 hours/week)
Introduces the distinct construction requirements of men’s clothing:
- Pattern construction for basic gents’ garments
- Constructing simple trousers and shirts
- Understanding fabric behaviour in tailored pieces
- Finishing techniques for structured garments
🧵 What You Will Have Made by the End of Term One
By the end of your first term at Delight, you will have produced multiple garments, both ladies’ and gents’ and built the foundational skills for everything that follows at Levels 4, 5, and 6.
“Term One at Delight is where beginners become makers. By Week 10, you will have made your first real garment from scratch.”
